I recently had the opportunity to attend the Natio

I recently had the opportunity to attend the National Domestic Violence Hotline Conference in Austin, Texas, and I left the experience inspired and reminded of the importance of our collective work to address domestic violence and support survivors. The lived experience and sight of survivors and advocates shared was powerful.

One of the highlights of the conference was the closing conversation featuring National Domestic Violence Hotline CEO Katie Ray-Jones and Dateline NBC correspondent Josh Mankiewicz. As a correspondent for Dateline NBC, the longest-running primetime program in NBC history, Mankiewicz has spent years reporting on complex stories involving crime, victimization, missing persons, and the experiences of individuals and families impacted by violence. The conversation between Katie Ray-Jones and Josh Mankiewicz was particularly meaningful because it highlighted the important intersection of storytelling, journalism, advocacy, and survivor-centered work.

I was able to connect with advocates, professionals, leaders, and colleagues from across the country who remain committed to this work. I returned from Austin informed, energized, and even more committed to advancing efforts that promote safety, dignity, healing, and empowerment.

I was honored to contribute to the Houston Public

I was honored to contribute to the Houston Public Safety Needs Assessment, published by Texas Southern University’s Center for Justice Research. As a criminologist and public health advocate, I value opportunities to support research that examines public safety through a comprehensive lens—one that considers community experiences, systemic challenges, and the social conditions that influence violence, victimization, and well-being.

This work reinforces my commitment to advancing evidence-informed, community-centered approaches to public safety. Meaningful and sustainable solutions require collaboration among researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the communities most directly affected by public safety challenges. I thank Dr. Howard Henderson who leads the Center for Justice Research for the opportunity to support such meaningful work.

True reform requires us to look directly at where our systems fail our communities, even when the data is uncomfortable to face. In public safety and criminal justice, ignoring structural gaps won't make them disappear.

We have to courageously face the truth of our current realities before we can strategically design a safer, more equitable future.
